I’m heading off to school in Auburn this fall, and I’ve been looking at a Auburn GA car insurance quote or two. They seem kind of high. Why is that?

Oh, there’s a thousand reasons behind that, but I can pinpoint a couple and tell you what to do.

• Your age. Since you’re starting college, you might have never considered your own rates separately from your parents, but they’ll be pretty high until you are 25, I hate to break it to you.

And what you can do to help…

• Ditch the car with the ‘rents. In Auburn like in most places, you don’t need a car as a student. If you live in dorms in the center of town and have friends to take you places, then drivign is an unnecessary luxury. Companies give discounts for students who go to school 100+ miles away and leave their car in mom and dad’s garage.
• Study hard. Keeping your GPA up could help you get the student discount, which can take a big bite out of your premium.
